Earlier in 2020, I returned to the Franschhoek Motor Museum near Cape Town, South Africa and was once again invited by Wayne Harley, the museum’s curator, to tune one of its treasured exhibits.
On this occasion, it was a 1961 Aston Martin DB4GT Superleggera, one of the most iconic and valuable British post-war sports cars. It was also the fastest road legal production car of its time. This particular example is one of only 49 RHD coupes built.
FMM hosts one of the finest collections of classic and vintage vehicles and covers more than 100 years of motoring history. During my first visit to this very special museum in 2018, I was invited to spend some time, both front of house and behind the scenes of the collection, from which a stunning original Ferrari 250GT SWB, was especially removed from exhibition for me to tune.
On my latest visit, I was filmed tuning this rare Aston Martin DB4GT for a special episode of my YouTube channel, Tyrrell’s Classic Workshop.
Afterwards, Wayne and I took in a test drive against the spectacular backdrop of this beautiful region of South Africa. The soundtrack is equally spectacular, as it features the Aston’s (dare I say) perfectly tuned straight-six engine.
